Title: Afternoon

Title: Afternoon, Acrylic on 36” by 36” canvas

I have had a sunset abstract sitting in my cupboard for a few years. I finally pulled it out to paint over. Not all my paintings end up on my wall, or yours - so they end up a recycled canvas ready for a new piece.

One afternoon, I set out to cover the sunset colours with a lighter botanic abstract. It didn’t really turn out as I wanted. Something that started as a peaceful exercise ended up being mildly stressful and frustrating. The colour palette looked a little chaotic and the composition felt disjointed.

My Dad once told me that the distance between expectations and reality is frustration. To alleviate frustration one must either change their expectations or their reality.

In this case, I chose to change my expectations. Even though this painting didn’t really look how I wanted and it ended up looking more chaotic than peaceful - I have decided to just enjoy it as it is.

It reflects a mood, a moment in time, a learning process and an afternoon’s activity.

It’s not my favourite piece. I’m glad someone else has found joy in it and decided to take it home. I’m mostly grateful for the little lesson to find enjoyment in the chaotic frustrating moments.
